Home > Faq's Frequently Asked QuestionsHOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO INSTALL A CEILING FAN?Generally a standard fan should take approximately 1 hour to install. This can vary depending on how old your home is and the wiring it contains. WHAT SORT OF ELECTRICIAN SHOULD I USE AND HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO INSTALL A CEILING FAN?All electricians are qualified to install ceiling fans. Contact a few electricians before making a booking and get an estimated quote. Most will quote a call out fee (between $50-$80) and then a further hourly rate. REPAIRS:All repairs on ceiling fans should be conducted by a licensed electrician. Failure to comply with this will void your warranty. FAN WON’T START:1. Check your summer/winter setting switch. Ensure the switch is not adjusted between the settings.
FAN IS NOISY:Some noise in electrical motors, including ceiling fan motors is normal. If the fan is making excessive noise after the initial installation, run it on high for 8-12 hours to settle the mechanics. This rectifies 80% of all noise problems. FAN TURNS BUT IT’S NOT MOVING MUCH AIR:1. Ensure the summer/winter switch is set correctly.
FAN WOBBLES CONSTANTLY:1. Check that the screws are tightened correctly.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERNECE BETWEEN A 3, 4 OR 5 BLADE FAN?3 blade ceiling fans move the air in the room more efficiently; however they are generally noisier then 4 & 5 blade fans as the motor is smaller in size. Generally there is no specific style that is more suitable over another. Before purchasing the fan take into account the size of the room, how often the fan will be used and what style suits the room. HOW HIGH SHOULD THE FAN BE FROM THE ROOF?All ceiling fans should be at least 90mm from the ceiling. CAN YOU ADJUST THE HEIGHT OF A CEILING FAN?Extension rods are commonly used for high ceilings to lower the fan. IS THERE ANY LEGAL LIMIT FOR THE HEIGHT OF THE FAN?Any ceiling fan should be at least 2.1m from the floor to the blades of the fan. CAN YOU CHANGE A CEILING FAN WITH A REMOTE TO A WALL SWITCH (OR VICE VERSA)?All Martec ceiling fans can be changed from wall switch to a remote sensor or vice versa. You cannot however, have both installed for the one fan. DO ALL CEILING FANS HAVE REVERSIBLE CYCLES?All Martec ceiling fans (past & present models) have the summer/winter settings. Martec designs are suitable for all households all year round energy savings. CAN THE BLADES ON A CEILING FAN BE CHANGED?Certain Martec ceiling fan models can have the blades changed. CAN A CEILING FAN BE INSTALLED ON A RAKED (SLOPED) CEILING?A ceiling fan can only be installed on a raked ceiling with a hangshaw canopy, not a
HOW LONG DOES A CEILING FAN LAST FOR?There is no set time frame for any specific fan, however all Martec ceiling fan models come with a conditional 3 year "in home"warranty. Many fans run successfully for 10- 30 years, however the blades may discolour over time and may need to be changed. DO CEILING FANS WITH METAL BLADES RUST?All metal fans will rust over time, especially when exposed to the elements, e.g. Areas with a lot of wind, sand or moisture. The only blades that do not rust are full 316 marine grade stainless and obviously wooden blades. WHAT TYPE OF BATTERY DOES THE REMOTE USE?The remote control uses a 9 volt C Size battery. CAN AN INFRA – RED REMOTE BE REPLACED WITH A STANDARD REMOTE?An infra-red remote can be replaced with another remote, however this may be very time consuming and costly. The fan will need to be re-wired to suit the new remote. The time and costs for this may out way far more then purchasing a new ceiling fan. CAN YOU REPLACE A 5 SPEED SETTING REMOTE WITH A 3 SPEED REMOTE?No, you can not use a 5 speed controller to replace a Martec 3 speed controller. DOES THE WALL SWITCH COME WITH A DIMMER LIGHT CONTROL?This is available only with some fan models and is an optional extra.
